Sep 14, 2012

Come and enjoy this community gathering and a time of recognition and celebration. This joint event will be held on Friday, September 14, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Centre for Community Based Research, with two separate scholarships being awarded.

This is the eleventh year that we will honour and celebrate a post-secondary student from Waterloo Region who demonstrates financial need through the Helmut Braun Post-secondary Scholarship Award. Timaj Garad is the recipient of this year's award and she is enrolled in the department of Social Development Studies at Renison University College, University of Waterloo. Timaj is also a spoken word artist who will share her poetry with us.

In addition, this year we are introducing the Chinese Post-secondary Scholarship Award funded by Kitchener Waterloo Cambridge Guelph Chinese Community. This scholarship is for students of Chinese heritage from Waterloo Region who are entering university and who have a deep desire to use their education to contribute to Canadian society. Five recipients of the award are: Tony Li (Health Studies, University of Waterloo), David Li (Health Studies, University of Western Ontario), Tom Chen (Health Studies, McMaster University), Venissa Xiao (Health Studies, University of Toronto) and Yujie Zhang (Accounting and Financial Management, University of Waterloo).

This celebration is an opportunity for the community from Waterloo Region to gather and network. Two keynote speakers (Dr. Ginette Lafrenière, Faculty of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University as well as Liming Su of the KW Chinese Alliance Association) will share their perspectives on equitable education and community-university partnerships. This event is free of charge and a light lunch will be served. For more information, check out this flyer
