Higher Education: International Conference

May 15, 2013

This is the 6th International Conference on Higher Education: Let's Build Transformative Knowledge to Drive Social Change held in Barcelona in mid-May. Joanna has been invited to facilitate the workshop session entitled: Building partnership: Making cooperation mainstream, which is scheduled on Tuesday, May 14th. This session will have a workshop orientation, which will include a presentation in the plenary and then a parallel session for discussion. For more information on this session, read here.

That same afternoon she will present at a session called Good Practices on Community Engagement.  Her conference presentation is called, Community Based Research and Innovative Practice: Mental Health and Cultural Diversity.

The session's abstract says, "This complex community-university research initiative ("Taking culture seriously in community mental health" with over 45 partners) demonstrated how community based research using participatory and action oriented approaches can stir innovative practice to address gaps and barriers in policy and in practice. This research initiative equipped and inspired people for change due to the collaborative knowledge production and knowledge mobilization efforts. During the duration of this research project there were ample opportunities for reciprocal relationship building, dynamic inclusion of community members, mental health providers, policy makers and academics alike, as well as a necessary space for developing the self-determination that is crucial within cultural communities for change to occur."
