The Community Research Ethics Office (CREO) was founded by the Centre for Community Based Research in 2011, based on a need for ethics review and protocol in community-based research.
The Centre for Community Based Research facilitated a needs assessment and feasibility study focused on the challenges associated with community based research in Waterloo Region between 2009-2010, leading to CREO’s implementation in 2011.
CREO seeks to support and strengthen community research in Canada and internationally. The Community Research Ethics Board consists of community-based researchers, academics, representatives of the non-profit sector, government and others with experience on research ethics boards.The board has 12 acting members.
In 2015 the Community Research Ethics Office incorporated as a non-profit organization.
