Training workshop for REPAS Pekine, DakarJan 19, 2009
The final leg of the trip to African took Jonathan to Pekine, a suburb of Dakar, Senegal where CCBR is exploring a partnership with Reseau de Recherche Participative en Afrique au Sud Du Sahar (REPAS). The purpose of the visit was to organize a training workshop in participatory action research methods for members of REPAS, and further explore partnerships opportunities with the organization. The workshop was jointly-facilitated by Jonathan and Lamine Kane, the spokesperson for REPAS. Besides the lessons in research
methods, the workshop provided an opportunity for Jonathan to
share CCBRs research experience with REPAS members and learn
about their own individual and organizational experiences in participatory action research.
At the end of the workshop, the
participants identified several topic areas for potential joint
research projects. The areas identified included exploring
the impact of flooding on residents of Pekine, drug use among
youth in Pekine, and using the internet to facilitate
collaboration among community based researchers. Both CCBR
and REPAS are considering some of these areas for further action.
According to a recent communication received from Lamine Kane,
REPAS has taken the next step by setting up four working groups
to further develop some of the areas
identified. |
